Your Body Adapts The More You Use It
When we think about working out, it’s easy to associate things like losing weight, building muscle or burning calories and those are absolutely be great reasons to exercise.
But there’s another reason…
I think a lot of people that are starting their fitness journey overlook: we really need to move so that we can enjoy life more and get better at just living.
Think about the things that you do every day.
Getting off the bed. Getting up from a chair. Carrying the groceries inside your house. Picking up and carrying your child. Walking up stairs or just picking up something off the ground.
We really need to be able to move so that we can enjoy life more and get better at just living.
When my wife and I travel, we are walking exponentially more than we do on a regular daily basis. Or rather, that used to be the case before we started our fitness journey. Also, we’re lugging around suitcases through the airport, which do have rollers, but still may require me lifting them if we have to check our luggage.
All of these things are normal movements throughout your life that you don’t want to struggle with for the majority of your lifetime. You need to be capable to do these things on your own.
Just like anything else, your body will adapt with what you consistently ask it to do.
If you want to walk and not feel absolutely wrecked when you get done, walk more.
If you constantly walk up and down the stairs to your child’s room or simply just to tuck them
at bedtime, you probably need to be taking the stairs more often when you are out and about.
If you wanna get out of your bed with ease or get down on the floor and pick up something underneath your sofa or your ottoman, practice getting up and down off of the floor more.
This is one of the biggest reasons why I believe so much in functional fitness movements.
When you are starting on your fitness journey, you may think that you’re training to lose some weight but what if you to reframe and have the mindset that your training for regular life movements?
A workout doesn’t have to be complicated to be valuable. A squat movement can help build strength every time you sit down and stand back up or every time you wake up and get off of the bed.
A farmer carry can help build the strength that you need when you’re carrying the groceries inside your house or when you are walking through an airport and needing to lift a potentially 50 pound suitcase.
A repeated step up movement can help prepare your body for stairs or just simply walking up and down the stairs repetitively can make your trek up and down the stairs to and from your child’s bedroom a whole lot easier.
My core belief is that walking is the most foundational and important movement that you can establish and start building from, in your new fitness journey.
Walking helps all of your lower body joints, including your back, your core and if you walk long enough, you’ll start feeling it and your shoulders and arms.
None of these very essential movements are very flashy and you’re likely not see a lot of fitness instructors/trainers or fitness content creators guiding you through simple but functionally essential movements.
The goal isn’t for you to be super awesome at exercising…
The goal is to build your body to allow you to do more of the things that you wanna do throughout your everyday life.
Hardest Part: Start™️.
