Recovery Isn’t Lazy. It’s Productive.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn is that pushing harder isn’t always the answer.

When I first started losing weight, I thought every workout had to leave me exhausted. If I wasn’t completely drained, I didn’t work hard enough.

Then the next morning came… If I woke up sore, I wore it like a badge of honor. If I wasn’t sore, I convinced myself I had wasted the workout.

Now I know, soreness isn’t the goal. Being sore doesn’t automatically mean you had a great workout. Not being sore doesn’t mean you had a bad one.

When you’re just getting started, your body is learning something completely new. Some days you’ll feel it for three days. Other days you’ll feel almost normal.

Neither one tells the whole story.

What matters is whether you can keep showing up. That’s where recovery comes in.

Recovery isn’t just sleep. It’s drinking enough water. It’s eating enough protein. It’s taking a walk instead of sitting on the couch all day. It’s doing a few minutes of mobility. Sometimes, it’s taking a day off because your body needs it.

I wish I would’ve understood that years ago.

I’ve pushed through aches/pains because I thought resting meant I was falling behind. I’ve dealt with lower back issues that forced me to stop running for a while. When I first started running, my knees constantly hurt because I was asking my body to do more than it was ready for.

Looking back, none of those problems came from a lack of effort. If anything, they came from too much effort and not enough recovery.

I’m still learning this lesson today.

There are still times when I want to push harder than I should. There are still days when I have to remind myself that taking care of my body isn’t quitting.

It’s what allows me to come back tomorrow.

Because here’s the truth. You don’t get stronger during your workout. You get stronger from recovering after it.

So this week, don’t judge your workout by how sore you are tomorrow.

Judge it by whether you’re giving yourself the opportunity to do another one.

Recovery isn’t lazy.

It’s productive.

Remember…Hardest Part: Start™️
